Best areas region by region

  • Antananarivo: stay near the centre (Analakely) or Isoraka for restaurants; business hotels near Ivato are soulless but practical for late arrivals.
  • Nosy Be: Ambatoloaka for choice and nightlife, Andilana for the beach, Nosy Komba for quiet. Book July, August and Christmas early.
  • Andasibe: forest lodges along the road to the reserve; two nights is the right rhythm.
  • Isalo (Ranohira): lodges with canyon views at the park gate; book the full-board options in high season.
  • Morondava: beach hotels in town; combine with Kirindy in a two-night stop.
  • Sainte-Marie: beach bungalows and Ile aux Nattes hideaways; August sells out first.

How to book: direct, platforms, operator

  • Book direct with lodges and hotels where possible, especially outside Nosy Be - rates are often better and cancellation fairer.
  • Comparison platforms work well for Nosy Be and Tana; coverage thins out elsewhere.
  • Via your operator: agencies that book your hotels should itemise them line by line - see our operator comparison to control quality.
  • Power and water: hotel reviews that mention hot water in August are gold; the grid is unreliable and only good hotels bridge the gaps.
