Whale watching: the main event
Each year humpback whales migrate from Antarctica to the sheltered channel between Sainte-Marie and mainland Madagascar to mate and calve. The season runs roughly from early July to late September, peaking in August, when mothers and calves swim close to shore and breaches happen within sight of the beach.
- Land-based watching: free and excellent from the east-coast headlands and the lighthouse at Pointe Rejuvenation.
- Boat trips: 2-3 hours with local operators; choose boats that keep distance and never chase animals.
- Swimming with whales: regulated and only allowed with licensed operators under strict rules. If it is offered casually, walk away.
Beaches and islets
- Ambodifotatra: the main town, with the island's only real restaurant strip and wharf.
- Plage de la Crique & Ile aux Nattes: the classic white-sand beaches with calm water, 15 minutes by boat.
- Forbans & Atafana (north): quiet bays and mangroves, good for kayaking.
Pirates, vanilla and island culture
Sainte-Marie was a pirate capital in the 17th and 18th centuries: the cemetery at Ambodifotatra contains the grave of the legendary Captain Kidd. Today the island is known for its botanical gardens, the Madagascar vanilla cycle (ask for a plantation visit) and unhurried, distinctly Malagasy village life. A simple "manahoana" (hello) opens doors here.
Getting there & getting around
- By air: 1 h 30 from Antananarivo (Sainte-Marie Airport, SMS), daily seasonal flights.
- By road and boat: 12+ hours from the capital via Toamasina or Soanierana Ivongo — possible but slow.
- On the island: scooters, bicycles and tuk-tuks; roads are short but rough in places.

- Guesthouses and bungalows: 25-70 EUR per night.
- Beach hotels: 80-180 EUR, often with breakfast and sea views.
- Whale trips: 40-80 EUR per person depending on duration and group size.
