The six regions at a glance

RegionSignature experienceIdeal stay
Highlands (Antananarivo, Andasibe)Rainforest lemurs, rice terraces, crafts3-5 days
North (Diego Suarez, Nosy Be)Bays, tsingy, diving, kite-surfing5-8 days
West (Morondava, Tsingy de Bemaraha)Baobabs, limestone tsingy, Sakalava culture4-6 days
South (Isalo, Toliara, Anakao)Canyons, spiny forest, reefs5-7 days
South-east (Ranomafana, Manakara)Cloud forest, waterfalls, Pangalanes canal3-5 days
East coast islands (Sainte-Marie, Masoala)Humpback whales, untouched rainforest4-7 days

Distances are deceptive: Madagascar's roads are slow, and the same 400 km can take four hours on the RN7 or eleven hours on a broken secondary road. That single fact should shape your itinerary more than any wish list.

Best routes: 10, 14 and 21 days

10 days — the classic south (RN7)

Antananarivo → Andasibe (2 nights) → flight or drive to Fianarantsoa → Ranomafana → Ambalavao → Isalo (2 nights) → Toliara → fly back. This is the most reliable itinerary in Madagascar: good roads, brilliant wildlife, manageable costs.

14 days — south + west

Add the west: fly Antananarivo → Morondava for the Avenue of the Baobabs and, if you have the budget, the Tsingy de Bemaraha. Two flights replace three days of driving.

Destination by destination

Nosy Be & the north-west

Madagascar's tourism capital: 30 minutes by plane from Antananarivo, warm sea year-round, reef diving at Nosy Tanikely, whale sharks from October to December, and laid-back beach towns like Ambatoloaka and Andilana. Ideal as the final beach week of any itinerary.

Diego Suarez (Antsiranana) & the far north

Wind-scoured tsingy at Ankarana, three spectacular bays, the red tsingy, lemurs at Montagne d'Ambre and world-class kite-surfing. Rough roads, huge rewards — 6-10 days minimum.

Isalo & the deep south

Sandstone canyons, palms, natural swimming pools and excellent walking. Continue south for Toliara's spiny forest, Anakao diving and the always-dry far south.

Andasibe-Mantadia & the eastern rainforest

The indri's loud dawn calls, chameleons at night, and the easiest rainforest experience in Madagascar at just three hours from the capital.

Morondava & the west

Baobabs at sunrise and sunset, Kirindy's night lemurs and, for those with time and 4x4, the Tsingy de Bemaraha — a UNESCO limestone labyrinth reachable only in the dry season.

Sainte-Marie & the east coast islands

Humpback whales from July to September, quiet beaches, sandbar islands and vanilla farms. Combine with Masoala if you want true rainforest wilderness.
