Why Isalo is different

Isalo is a ruiniform massif of sandstone eroded into canyons, windows and pillars, rising abruptly out of the flat southern plain. Because of its altitude and rainfall pattern, it shelters palm oases and cool pools while the surrounding land is dry. Both Verreaux's sifaka and ring-tailed lemurs are habituated to visitors, making Isalo the easiest place in Madagascar to watch wild lemurs at close range — respectfully.

The best hiking routes

• Piscine Naturelle (1-2 h, easy): the classic walk to a clear pool with waterfall and picnic spot; busy in the middle of the day.
• Piscine Bleue & Piscine Noire (half day, moderate): longer canyon route through palm groves with swimming stops.
• Canyon des Singes (African canyon) & Canyon des Rats (half day, moderate): vertical walls, sifaka sightings and fewer people.
• Fenêtre de l'Isalo (window): short climb to a natural rock arch with a view over the plain — best at sunset.

Wildlife you will see

Where to stay
