Diego Suarez: Madagascar's Wild North

Three spectacular bays, limestone tsingy, rainforest lemurs and the most reliable wind in the Indian Ocean — the north is Madagascar's best-kept adventure secret.

Antsiranana, Diana region · Best May-November · Updated September 2026

What makes the north different

Antsiranana — still universally called Diego Suarez — sits on one of the largest natural harbours on Earth, surrounded by volcanic hills. Because the north receives two monsoons, it has a strange double climate: lush rainforest on the eastern slopes and semi-desert on the west, with the famous red tsingy in between. That contrast in a radius of 150 km is why the north rewards slower travel.

The unmissable sites

  • Ankarana Special Reserve: grey tsingy limestone pinnacles, caves with bats and crocodiles, crowned lemurs and ring-tailed lemurs — 3-4 h from Diego, worth an overnight.
  • Montagne d'Ambre National Park: cool montane rainforest with waterfalls, chameleons and seven lemur species, 40 minutes from town.
  • The three bays: Sakalava Bay, Pigeon Bay (with its red rock and lighthouse) and Dune Bay — the classic day tour by 4x4.
  • Red Tsingy (Tsingy Rouge): iron-rich laterite formations eroded into spires; best light late afternoon.
  • Emerald Sea & Mer d'Emeraude: shallow, luminous turquoise water north of the bay, reached by boat.

Kitesurfing & beaches

From June to November the Diego wind machine runs almost every day: flat water inside the bay, waves outside, and kite schools on Sakalava Bay. It is one of the cheapest places in the world to learn, and the season overlaps perfectly with Europe's summer.

Getting there

  • By air: 1 h 45 direct flights from Antananarivo to Antsiranana (DIE) — the only sensible option.
  • Internal transport: hire a 4x4 with driver for Ankarana and the bays; roads are rough and distances deceptive.
  • Minimum stay: four nights for the bays and Montagne d'Ambre; six to eight nights to add Ankarana and the Emerald Sea properly.

Costs & stays

  • Guesthouses in town: 25-50 EUR per night, simple but well located.
  • Beach bungalows (Sakalava, Ramena): 60-130 EUR, sea views and kitesurf schools nearby.
  • Lodges and boutique hotels: 150 EUR upward.
  • Day tours: 60-100 EUR per vehicle for the three bays with driver; park fees extra.
