Nosy Be: Madagascar's Island of Perfume and Reefs

Warm water year-round, reef diving, whale sharks, ylang-ylang plantations and the easiest beach holiday in Madagascar — 30 minutes by plane from the capital.

North-west Madagascar · Best Oct-Dec for whale sharks · Updated September 2026

Why Nosy Be

Nosy Be means "big island" in Malagasy, and it delivers exactly what most travellers want after a dusty road trip: calm, warm, clear water; reliable sunshine from April to November; restaurants serving seafood straight off the boat; and a tourism infrastructure that actually works. Its ylang-ylang and vanilla plantations perfume the island, and the neighbouring islets give Madagascar some of its best snorkelling.

The best beaches

  • Andilana — the postcard beach on the north-west tip: long white sand, calm swimming, sunset facing the sea.
  • Ambatoloaka — the lively strip with hotels, bars and dive centres; excellent for a short stay.
  • Madirokely — quieter than Ambatoloaka, good swimming, local food shacks.
  • Nosy Komba & Nosy Tanikely — islets reached by boat: lemurs and handicrafts on Komba, a marine reserve with turtles and reef fish on Tanikely.

Diving, snorkelling & whale sharks

  • Nosy Tanikely Marine Reserve: the best snorkelling — turtles, reef fish and coral in 3-8 m of water, ideal for beginners.
  • Dive sites: Nosy Iranja, the Mitsio archipelago and the wrecks north of Hell-Ville suit intermediate divers; visibility peaks from August to November.
  • Whale sharks: plankton blooms bring them close from October to December, with sightings at Nosy Tanikely and Nosy Mamoko. Choose operators that keep distance and limit swimmers per shark.
  • Humpback whales: passing July to September — mostly seen from boats, occasionally from the coast.
